Industry veteran Paul Bohan has been creating value for the mortgage and fixed income businesses since the early 90’s where he led a number of the Resolution Trust Corporation (the RTC) dispositions for commercial and residential mortgages including such landmark projects as the commercial loan allotment for the American Savings/New West Federal Savings and Loan split representing both Paine Webber and Price Waterhouse as financial advisor and due diligence specialist respectively. After stints working for due diligence leaders including SVP at National Mortgage Specialists and Clayton Group (now Clayton Holdings) Paul recognized a need for greater technological innovation in the secondary market and founded Bohan Group in 1995.
At Bohan Group he developed the industry changing software BRAIN (Bohan Risk Analysis Information Network) that was the first software of its kind to have intelligent input testing and masking and even more he created the first truly interactive reports in the mortgage and structured finance businesses substantially replacing hard copy reports. After selling Bohan Group and its suite of softwares to First American Corporation, Paul continued to lead this new partnership which also included First Indian Corporation in Bangalore, India. After leaving the partnership he started a number of Silicon Valley startups before returning to mortgages as a Compliance Officer in 2015. His leadership at Cognitive Options Group is predicated on a commitment to creating new services and products that solve the problems facing an ever changing environment through cutting edge technologies and focused industry expertise.
Nathan A. Justice
Director of Operations
Mortgage expert Nathan A. Justice has over 25 years of experience in the mortgage and financial services industry. Prior to joining Cognitive Options Group, Nathan worked with many leading mortgage companies since 1992. His job duties included Operations Director, Branch Management, Training Manager, Underwriting Manager and Business Development Officer. His responsibilities have included the implementation and management of due diligence and underwriting solutions, compliance reviews, fraud reviews and asset management. Guiding the success of his teams as the Operations Director, he manages company operations, contract resources and client relationships.
Before entering the mortgage banking and financial services industry Nathan served in the US Navy aboard the USS Mount Vernon, a troop transport vessel. After a long term at sea, in support of Operation Desert Shield, Operation Desert Storm and Operation Sea Angel he was honorably discharged and awarded several military commendations.
Director of Operations
Abayneh is a finance professional with deep quantitative analysis background and financial modeling skills. Over the last 15 years, Abayneh has managed whole loan conduit, transactional, and servicing engagements for several investment banks including Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, Citi, Barclays, and Bank United overseeing pipelines with monthly volume in excess of $300 million.
Abayneh has also managed client-facing relationships coordinating with traders, capital markets, and secondary market investment banks. He has also coordinated and supervised the credit, compliance, servicing, fraud, valuation, and compliance due diligence for loan- by-loan and bulk transaction purchases and is proficient at assessing risk factors and performance probability for loan-by- loan and bulk acquisitions.
Abayneh is adept at evaluating complex loan documentation, such as appraisal reports, compliance inspections, credit reports, verifications, and tax returns, to determine the creditworthiness of borrowers. He has meticulously researched and analyzed market conditions in the geographic areas where mortgage loans were originated. He has evaluated, analyzed, and distributed applicable changes and updates to production staff when necessary. Abayneh also recommended modifications to underwriting procedures/standards and always responded to audits in a timely manner.
With regard to due diligence and data, Abayneh recently evaluated and reconfigured a proprietary due diligence system, including redesigning fields/screens as well as developing logic to engineer a robust, scalable, and sophisticated solution that met the needs of a broad range of clients. He also researched and implemented enhancements to the system’s reliability, performance, and compliance with regulatory requirements such as RESPA, MDIA, TILA, TRID, and QM/ATR.
Mary has over 13 years of experience in the mortgage and due diligence industry. Prior to joining Cognitive Options Group, Mary has served in management roles in all phases of the housing and due diligence sectors. From loan origination to vendor risk management, she has worked attentively with the development and implementation of policies and procedures for clients, audit research and quality review of loan portfolios.
